Too often, monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) is treated as something that happens after a strategy is set—used to measure progress rather than shape direction. But the most effective strategies don’t separate learning from decision-making. They embed it throughout. When learning is integrated from the outset through research, stakeholder engagement, and ongoing reflection, it becomes a practical tool for testing assumptions, refining direction, and making better decisions in real time.

I joined Panorama Strategy as MEL Practice Lead to help scale what already works: ensuring evidence doesn’t just report on strategy, but actively shapes it. Having spent my career working with clients and building systems that bring evidence into strategy and organizational change efforts across the social impact sector, I was excited to contribute to strengthening how data, learning, and stakeholder voice inform decision-making for Panorama partners.

In my first 30 days, I reviewed active projects and worked alongside colleagues to see how evidence-informed learning is already integrated into our team’s work. What immediately stood out was the team’s commitment to innovative, rigorous approaches that help partners develop meaningful strategies and implementation plans. I also saw a strong orientation toward using data to inform strategic decisions. It made me proud to be part of such a thoughtful and capable group doing important work to help clients deepen the impact of their initiatives.

Learning as a foundational approach

At Panorama, evidence and learning are consistently integrated into strategy work as a core way of partnering with clients. I’ve noticed this show up in early research and analysis, and ongoing dialogue with partners to surface insights and test assumptions. There is a clear commitment to grounding strategy in real-world evidence and lived experience. Learning is not treated as an abstract concept, but as a practical tool for understanding context, refining direction, and shaping decisions that lead to meaningful impact.

Practical, accessible learning as a core strength

What is especially compelling is how accessible this learning orientation feels. The team prioritizes clear, straightforward language and focuses on insights that directly inform decision-making. This is essential to ensuring that evidence translates into action. Rather than relying on overly technical or abstract analysis, the emphasis is on generating usable insights that practitioners can quickly understand and apply in real-world contexts.

A culture of connection that powers learning across the work

In early conversations with my new colleagues, I was struck by how collaboration and communication are central to how the team partners with clients—and to how learning is embedded from the outset. Learning happens through ongoing dialogue, shared reflection, and a genuine openness to multiple perspectives, particularly from clients and stakeholders closest to the work. The team creates intentional space for joint sensemaking: validating insights together and working alongside clients to interpret what the evidence is revealing. These collaborative moments turn insights into shared understanding and strengthen the quality of the strategy.  By communicating clearly and listening deeply, the team ensures that learning is used and translated into better decisions for greater impact.

Strengthening and scaling learning in practice

Looking ahead, I’m excited to build on this strong foundation together, continuing to strengthen how we intentionally and consistently apply evidence and learning across our work. This includes identifying opportunities to deepen our MEL approaches and expand MEL into more partner engagements, developing practical tools and guidance that make it easier for teams to gather evidence to inform strategy, and creating more structured spaces for cross-project knowledge sharing on effective MEL practices. Ultimately, the goal is to strengthen how we work so evidence and learning are consistently central to how we sharpen strategy, deepen client partnerships, and maximize impact.

As I reflect on my first 30 days at Panorama, I feel especially grateful to have joined such an innovative and dynamic organization that is deeply committed to centering learning to advance meaningful impact across the social sector.
